Blue Team Wethers

Grand Champion Market Goat – 2024 Rodeo Austin
Shown by Brisco Black – Bred by Blue Team

What’s the pedigree of your champion?
I Am Legend X 1962 (Reserve Grand Champion Doe at the 2019 Georgia Nationals)

What was this goat like as a baby?
He was extremely exotic, big boned, with lots of shag.

Who’s been the most influential buck or Doe to your herd?
We have SO many bucks and does that we truly love and appreciate their influences on our goat herd.  We try to keep multiple genetic bloodlines to create our own outcrosses within our program.
We have SO many favorites, and different reasons that we deem certain animals as influential. It is hard to pinpoint just one, but if you look at revenue: the buck who generated the most revenue, and many champions, for us last season was I Am Legend (sire to Brisco’s wether), and the 2nd highest generating doe last season was 1962 (dam to Brisco’s wether). That genetic combination was destined for something great!

Has there been anything about your operation that is unique that you haven’t seen in other places?
There are several things about our facility that we think are pretty unique and are definitely very user friendly. Our kidding room and flush system allows us to move flush and AI groups in and out of the jugs in a timely manner, and is simple to keep clean and sanitary. Our working chute (from Australia) allows us to work large groups of does without having to handle each of them individually.

Do you prefer Online or live Sales?
We love both platforms equally. Live sales allow us to interact personally with customers, and online sales let customers from across the country who can’t be here in person the opportunity to purchase livestock as well!

What’s the pedigree of your champion?
Reserve Grand Champion Arizona National:
Good As Gold X Who’s Your Daddy X Soldier Boy

Reserve Grand Champion San Antonio Livestock Show and Rodeo:
Russian Princess X P67 X Knock Out
He was the flushmate brother to our new herd sires Thunder and Lightening. His dam was a Division Champion at the 2021 NAILE shown by Paige Pence.

What was this goat like as a baby?
Both of these wethers were very complete, good on their feet and legs and were definite stand outs in their sale groups.

Who’s been the most influential buck or Doe to your herd?
We have SO many bucks and does that we truly love and appreciate their influences on our goat herd.  We try to keep multiple genetic bloodlines to create our own outcrosses within our program.
Some of the bucks would include: Star Buck, Who’s Your Daddy, Soldier Boy, and several of our current sires like Russian Princess, Moose, I am Legend and Drago!

Has there been anything about your operation that is unique that you haven’t seen in other places?
We love our kidding room and working facilities. We feel that these facilities are unique to our operation.  Our kidding room is set up on a grate floor and flush system like you would see in large hog operations and our working chute is one that was designed and used in large commercial sheep operations in Australia.

Do you prefer Online or live Sales?
We actually really like and use both platforms almost equally.  They each serve a very unique purpose and help us serve customers from local to all over the United States.

Who has influenced you the most in the industry?
We have been blessed to have had many mentors not only from within the goat industry, but from all of the different livestock industries.  Learning from and appreciating successful people no matter what species they raise is something that we have done for a long time.  We admire those who have had success and longevity within their specific species, within an ever changing industry!

AMERICAN ROYAL
NATIONAL CHAMPION SPOTLIGHT

Grand Champion Market Goat – 2023 American Royal
Shown by Maci Zerbach – Bred by Blue Team

What’s the pedigree of your champion?
BTW Russian Princess x BTW Fabio

In your opinion, who has been the most influential buck across the industry?
It is hard to say what buck has been the most influential across the entire wether goat industry, but we would say in our personal breeding program, it was ‘BTW Who’s Your Daddy’. BTW Fabio and Soldier Boy were direct sons of WYD. Those 2 bucks definitely made a huge impact for us, in both females we kept in our donor program and bucks we kept as well. Those two bucks and WYD will continue to impact our program for years to come.

What makes your operation run smoothly?
An operation of our size definitely doesn’t just run itself. We currently have 3 full-time employees, Deana and myself, and when he’s home Hayden. We all play a different role at times, and then work together some days. Everyone understanding how important each and every daily task is, especially during breeding and kidding seasons is very important. We are blessed to have the best and are very thankful for them.

What does your breeding season look like? Do you AI or flush most of your Females?
Our breeding season consists of both AI’s and flushes. In 2023 we will flush 13 times, and close to 300 head of donors. We also AI every natural doe on the place. When AI season is over, we will have AI’d approximately 300 head as well.

How has the new reproduction practices impacted your herd?
We are firm believers in all of the new reproduction practices. Whether it is flushing, AI’ing, IVF, or cloning we do them all. These practices allow us to utilize both bucks and does, on a different level. With the sheer number of animals that we breed each year, our buck battery could not keep up, but AI’ing, flushing and IVF allow us to use them extensively without wearing them down. These practices also allow us to use our donor does more than one time per season, and we change their matings as well.

What’s your dream as a producer?
I don’t think we are different than any show animal producer. Our DREAM is to continue to raise champion wethers and does, and continue to help our customers win on local, state, and national levels! We firmly believe that if you are not working to better your stock and services, to make your CUSTOMERS dreams come true, then you are not working for the right reasons!

Do you prefer online sales or live sales?
We absolutely love both platforms! We hold 5 live sales each season at our ranch in Zephyr, TX. We love the live sales because they allow us to have that ever important personal contact with customers. Putting faces with names is very important to us! We also understand the importance of the online platforms. We use both SC Online Sales and CCI.live. Both of these amazing platforms allow customers from across the state and country the opportunity to buy from us as well. We answer a multitude of calls and texts about online sale lots and enjoy that form of contact with customers as well!

What’s the pedigree of your champion?

How many years have you been raising Goats?
We started BLUE TEAM WETHERS in 1999, which means we’ve been at it for 24 years!

How many head do you run?

How has the new reproduction practices impacted your herd?
We flush 7 months out of the year, and during those 7 months we flush close to 250 donors. We AI all of our natural does, and beginning in 2020 we started doing some IVF work as well.  All of these reproduction practices have drastically improved our herd and allowed us to utilize our herd sires more efficiently.

What buck or Doe has been most influential to your herd?
That is a hard question and one that we don’t take lightly, but the most influential buck for us was probably Soldier Boy.  He added so many good things in his off-spring and we were strategic when keeping Soldier Boy bred does for our donor pen, along with several Soldier Boy bred bucks to our battery.  His Legacy will continue to make an impact for years to come.

We have loved the I AM Legend kids, and have several new and very exciting sires that we can’t wait to see kids out of as well!!!

Who has impacted you on your operation the most?
The livestock industry, and especially the wether goat industry, have been impacted and influenced by some great individuals. For me personally my grandfather and dad raised and traded goats my whole life, which peaked my initial interest into the industry. Over the years there have been several individuals who have helped and even challenged me in our operation. I am forever grateful to those who have been a part of the 24 year process, like one of my closest friends, Chad Walker. He has offered his great eye, his honesty and opinions the last few years, which has brought a fresh and honest perspective to our breeding program at BTW. My wife and son have also had a huge impact on our operation, and without their daily input and efforts we would not have near the successes.

SAN ANGELO STOCK SHOW CHAMPION SPOTLIGHT

Grand Champion Market Goat – 2023 San Angelo Stock Show
Shown by Cydney Newsom – Bred by Blue Team

What is the best decision you think you made for your operation?
We have been doing this a while, so we have made lots of decisions over the years, but probably the best decision was in 2014 when we decided to move our operation to our ranch in Zephyr. We built a facility and operation that is extremely functional and user friendly and one we enjoy operating  and working in daily.

What buck has played the biggest part in getting you to where you are today?
There are many BTW sires that have played a huge role in our operation from the beginning. Bucks like Starbuck, that were before their time, gave us a doe and donor base like no other. And then there is Soldier Boy who has made more Champions than I can list, and has played a major role in creating  many stud bucks and donor does over the years. Both Starbuck and Soldier Boy have made a lasting impact on BTW genetics and will definitely hold a place in our history books.

What was your opinion on your champion as a baby?
Cydney’s wether was a Hat Trick X Went doe (purchased at 2021 Friday Night Fiesta). Hat Trick has sired some great ones for us. We were excited to take him to Friday Night Fever and offer him on that stage!

If you could take over another operation what would it be and why?
I don’t think we have enough hours in our days to take anything else on! We better stick with the goats!

Who would you like to thank for getting you where you are today?
Joe Raff, our partner at BTW, has played a huge roll in our matings for flushes, and is a true genetic mastermind. He has taught me so much over the years, especially on the genotype end of the show wether operation. His knowledge is priceless and always appreciated!

What was your opinion on your champion as a baby?
Carson’s wether was a EZ Bake x Soldier Boy x Kilo. We thought he was a very complete animal. He had a genetic combination of power, hard muscle, bone, and shag. Those 4 pieces should put together a pretty good one in our opinion!!!!

Brisco’s wether was Moose X ALi X Silver Bullets mom. As a baby he had all the pieces and parts. He was a little green, but definitely was one we felt could put it all together. His pedigree was stout. Moose was one of our favorite new sires, and he sired the Grand Champion Market Goat at NAILE in 2022. Ali was known for the doe base he sired, and Silver Bullet is one of our current herd sires!

Flint’s wether was a P67 x Hoss x Soldier Boy.  Two shots of Soldier Boy with the Schrank genetics (P67) is a definite no brainer. That genetic combination has sired many Champions, and we had no doubt about this one either!

NAILE
CHAMPION SPOTLIGHT

Grand Champion Market Goat – 2022 NAILE
Shown by Hayden Schroeder – Bred by Blue Team

Hayden’s wether was sired by BTW Moose.

As a breeder, what is one trait you won’t tolerate?
As a breeder we like good looking, good moving and good made livestock with plenty of muscle. A lack of any of those traits would be something we wouldn’t tolerate in our breeding program.

Tell us about your family, and how they are involved in your operation
My son Hayden and wife Deana are a huge part of what we do here at Blue Team Wethers. They are part of everything from kidding out babies, sale preparations, feeding, and selection. It is definitely a family affair and one that we spend many hours working together for the betterment of our operation.

Over the past years, the goat show world has drastically changed, what do you think has had the most impact on that?
I think there are probably several factors that have changed the goat world over the past few years. Online sale platforms and being able to ship livestock across the country really made it possible to get genetics out there and change and improve breeding programs. The opportunities to purchase semen, jumps, etc has also made a huge impact on the show goat world as well.

When you have a champion in the grand drive, are you able to watch? Or does the suspense get to you?
We absolutely watch every opportunity we can. If we are not there in person we appreciate the fact that a lot of shows have a live stream, so we can root for our goats from anywhere!

What is one thing you are breeding for to constantly make the next generation better?
We like to think that we are a forward thinking operation, and that your kid crops each year should be going in that forward direction as well. We believe that by introducing some outside genetics from successful breeders each year to improve and keep our program moving forward is one major thing we do to make the next generations better.

Reserve Champion Market Goat – 2022 Mississippi Youth Expo
Shown by Hayes Henderson – Bred by Blue Team

Fabio X Black Friday
BTW Fabio has been an intrical part of our breeding program. He’s sired his fair share of banner winners and one of our favorite BTW sires, Rip!!! Fabio’s dam, Ronda, holds a special place in our breeding program and has made a lasting impression for sure!

Paige and Cruella had a fun jackpot season and were selected Grand Champion Breeding Doe at the 2022 American Royal.

The wether is BTW Moose X BTW Ali
Moose sired the Grand Champion Market Wether at the 2022 NAILE and had sired several of our upcoming keeper bucks. Ali’s flushmate sisters and does retained out of Ali have been extremely important in our breeding program!!!

Hayes has won numerous fall jackpot shows and fairs with his wether! They have definitely had a banner run. This wether was purchased in an online wether sale at SC Online sales, and placed by Chad Walker Livestock.

What is your Favorite doe/donor and why?
We have several donor does that are super special to us here at BTW, and Ronda and Kiki definitely rise to the top of that list. Each were banner winners in their show days, and each have sired several stud bucks for us, that have added lots of depth to our buck battery.

What us your advice for families wanting to start showing goats?
The advice that we like to give is to find a breeder you are comfortable with, and one that can help with starting your projects on the right foot. We also strongly encourage finding a person that can help serve as a second set of eyes for your show projects. We can’t express enough how important this is in a successful showbarn setting!!!

Treadmill vs Track
We do both. If you are blessed with a good track dog, we feel that can definitely change a program for the better. We also use the treadmill a lot and feel that is an investment that pays dividends as well.

Chain vs Halter
We definitely suggest chains, but understand that all goats are not compatible with a chain and a halter might be necessary. We also know that goats are strong and for a young showman a halter can give the added confidence needed for them to get started on a positive foot!

Hayden’s wether had a great fall. He won RING A and Reserved RING B at the Pre-sort Jackpot in Texas.

What is your Favorite doe/donor and why?
We have several donor does that are super special to us here at BTW, and Ronda and Kiki definitely rise to the top of that list. Each were banner winners in their show days, and each have sired several stud bucks for us, that have added lots of depth to our buck battery.

OHIO STATE FAIR
CHAMPION SPOTLIGHT

Reserve Market Goat – 2022 Ohio State Fair
Shown by Ethan Davies – Bred by Blue Team

Pedigree/Genetics of this Champion:
Ethan’s wether was out of BTW SHAKE AND BAKE X BLACK BETTY. Black Betty was the champion middle weight doe at 2020 NAILE and shown by the Pence family.

Ethan had a really fun summer with this wether bringing home several big jackpot wins. He was sold in our online fall born sale and placed by Cooper Bounds.

What is your Favorite doe/donor and why?
We have a very large and extensive flush program. We flush close to 250 head a year. We hold many of those donors to the highest regards and love so many things about all of them, but if I had to pick a donor that I feel has made a legendary mark here at BTW it would be a close decision between Ronda and Kiki. Ronda is no longer alive but the lasting impression she has made here will live on through many generations! She was the dam to BTW Fabio, BTW Black Gold, the Champion Doe at the 2019 AZ Nationals, and the Grand Champion Market Goat at the 2020 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.    Kiki is the mother to BTW Shake and Bake and Magic Man, the Grand Champion Market Goat at the 2020 GA Nationals, the Grand Champion Market Goat at the Tulsa State Fair, Reserve Grand Champion Market Goat at 2020 NAILE and the Grandmother to our newset stud buck I Am Legend!!!

Advice for exhibitors?
Our advice is to find a breeder that you feel comfortable working with and one that will answer questions for you during the duration of your project. Get on a good feeding program: fresh and easily accessible feed is very important!!! Exercise programs are also important. Whether you have outside help deciding on the best exercise program for your animals or you make that decision yourself, stay consistent and find one that works for your family and with your goals!

Treadmill vs Track
We like and do both! To us they each have a specific role in a successful program and creating a specific program for each animal in your barn is crucial!

Chain vs Halter
We prefer a chain, but do understand there are animals and circumstances where a halter must be used.

MICHIGAN LIVESTOCK EXPO
CHAMPION SPOTLIGHT

Reserve Champion Market Goat – 2022 Michigan Livestock Expo
Shown by Talan Hiemstra – Bred by Blue Team

Pedigree/Genetics of this Champion:
This wether was sired by BTW Hoss. He’s the flushmate brother to two of our newest herd sires: BTW Spence and BTW Be Blessed.

Talan’s wether was sold in our January Fall Born online sale at SC Online. He was placed by Dave Williams and Cooper Bounds.

How did you get involved in the industry?
We have been raising show wethers since 1999. We got started with the hopes of raising competitive wethers for our children and it evolved into a full-time occupation!

What is one of the most memorable events from your time as a breeder?
We have been in the industry for a long time and have really enjoyed watching exhibitors find success with our genetics over the years. It’s amazing when your own children win, but it’s just as rewarding when your customers, who actually become family, find success of their own..

What do you think has pushed your program forward over the years?
We have always been progressive thinkers and breeders. Bringing in outside genetics and finding those out crosses that work with our genetics has helped continue to move in the right direction. We also enjoy creating unique pieces of livestock, and our intense flush programs help us continue to make those unique pieces and creatures.

What is your favorite part about raising goats?
I think that we really enjoy seeing the babies hit the ground. It’s in those moments that let you know almost immediately if your work in lining up the flush matings worked. We kid out 9 months of the year, so we sort of have to like “kidding season”!!!

NAILE
CHAMPION SPOTLIGHT

Grand Champion Wether Dam – 2021 North American International Livestock Expo
Shown by Paige Pence – Bred by Blue Team

Soldier Boy x Porn Star x Who’s Your Daddy

How did you get involved in the industry?
We started Blue Team Wethers in 1999. The size of our operation has grown tremendously over the years, but our main focus has always been to raise top end wether genetics.

What is one of the most memorable events from your time as a breeder?
We have been fortunate enough to have raised many champions over the last 22 years. Each and every success is a great memory, and it’s hard to pick just one! However, even with the  shortened show season of 2020-2021, it was one of our most successful years! We had 48 exhibitors showing our animals that were banner winners at state and national shows.

What do you think has pushed your program forward over the years?
Our focus on extensive flush and AI programs, with the desire to continually make animals better, has kept us moving in the right direction.

What is your favorite part about raising goats?
We absolutely love seeing the exhibitors and their families find success with our goats.  That is one of the reasons we started using the #raisinglegends in our merchandise and ads. We like to believe that it is not just the livestock that wins, it is the entire family.
