Blue Team Wethers

INDIANA STATE FAIR
CHAMPION SPOTLIGHT

Reserve Grand Champion Market Goat – 2023 Indiana State Fair
Shown by Caroline Sullivan – Bred by Blue Team

What’s the pedigree of your champion?
BTW Good As Gold (Clone of BTW Black Gold)

How many years have you been raising Goats?
Blue Team Wethers was established in 1999. So we have been raising goats for about 24 years!

How many head do you run?
We run approximately 1200 head

How has the new reproduction practices impacted your herd?
We flush 7 months out of the year, and during those 7 months we flush close to 250 donors. We AI all of our natural does, and beginning in 2020 we started doing some IVF work as well.  All of these reproduction practices have drastically improved our herd and allowed us to utilize our herd sires more efficiently.

What buck or Doe has been most influential to your herd?
That is a hard question and one that we don’t take lightly, but the most influential buck for us was probably Soldier Boy.  He added so many good things in his off-spring and we were strategic when keeping Soldier Boy bred does for our donor pen, along with several Soldier Boy bred bucks to our battery.  His Legacy will continue to make an impact for years to come.

Brittney Schmillen

Ethan Davies

We caught up with Brittney Schmillen, the exhibitor the Reserve Grand Champion 4-H Market Goat at the 2023 Iowa State Fair! Learn a little more about Brittney below!

Age: 12

Hometown: Marcus, Iowa

Grade: 6th Grade-Remsen St. Mary’s

What’s your Goat name? and what made him/her so special?
My goat’s name is Luke and he is the first goat that I have ever owned and shown so that makes him special from the start. Luke was purchased from Chad Walker and raised by Blue Team Wethers, he has been an awesome addition to the barn and has had a very successful start.

Throughout your show career what’s been your favorite Goat?
That would have to be Luke….I’m sure as I continue to show there will be some other favorites but he was the one that got me started  and will always have a special place in my heart.

What do you tell yourself right before you go into the ring?
Stay calm and try not to show my emotions on my face 🙂

What’s your dream college to attend?
I haven’t quite thought that far ahead yet but I could see myself going to an Ag School closer to home.

What’s your favorite thing to do in the barn?
Play my music and boss my brothers around….I do like working legs. I also like lambing season in the barn, I look forward to helping with the new babies every year

What’s your favorite show? and why?
I love the Iowa State Fair….I spent so many years watching my big brother Sam show and now this year I was finally old enough to participate. 8 days of being in the barn and running around the fair with my friends, it was a lot of fun.

How do you stay focused on reaching your goal?
Her name is Jill Schmillen.

Who has been your biggest influence?
Being new to the Goat Barn, we received a lot of help from Chad Walker leading up to the State Fair. Then for show day prep and some tweaking on showmanship Hayden Schroeder from Blue Team Wethers came over and helped me out. All of their help is much appreciated and I couldn’t have accomplished what I did without all of their guidance.

Pfeiffer Farms

OKLAHOMA YOUTH EXPO
CHAMPION SPOTLIGHT

Reserve Grand Champion Breeding Doe – 2023 Oklahoma Youth Expo
Shown by Tabrey Lierle – Bred by Pfeiffer Farms

What is the best decision you think you made for your operation?
We feel that only selling goats through live or online sales has been a great decision for us. Nothing sells private treaty from our farm.

What buck has played the biggest part in getting you to where you are today?
I would say it would be a mix of four bucks- Chunky Monkey,Colt, Wrangler, Grey Goose

What was your opinion on your champion as a baby?
This doe actually had a pretty rough start. She drifted from 4 different moms before she found one, putting her pretty far behind. When she finally found a mom, she was very skinny, and it took her until mid August to really catch up. But we knew she was special for sure!

If you could take over another operation what would it be and why?
Something that took less work! Haha! We are thankful everyday that we get to do what we love, and wouldn’t trade it for the world.

Who would you like to thank for getting you where you are today?
Glen Martin showed up to our first sale, and hasn’t missed more than a couple since. We are thankful for his knowledge and effort that he puts in to our operation.

We started with 100 does from Harbour Livestock

What is one of the most memorable events from your time as a breeder?
I would have to say going to the Friday night fever wether sale every year.

What do you think has pushed your program forward over the years?
The customers we have gotten over the year is the main thing that has helped our program.

What is your favorite part about raising goats?
Our favorite part is when we get to help family’s and children be a part or the showing industry.

SAN ANGELO STOCK SHOW
CHAMPION SPOTLIGHT

Grand Champion Market Goat – 2022 San Angelo Stock Show
Shown by Banner Young – Bred by Pfeiffer

Ladies Man x Snoop dogg
Banner’s goat was also Reserve Division at Georgia National

What is your Favorite doe/donor and why?
That’s a tough one we flush a lot of donors I don’t know that we have a favorite per say but this one’s mother 9097 would rank high on our list.

What us your advice for families wanting to start showing goats?
I think the main thing is the stay positive and always be open to learning. Also this deal takes Alot of work you have to be willing to put the time in to get the reward.

Treadmill vs Track
I like the track better.

Chain vs Halter
Chain every day of the week. The way they carry their head looks so much better than on a halter. The showman also has more control.

Droppert Livestock

INDIANA STATE FAIR
CHAMPION SPOTLIGHT

Reserve Market Goat – 2022 Indiana State Fair
Shown by Spencer Goettemoeller – Bred by Droppert Livestock

Pedigree/Genetics of this Champion:
One & Only x “Matilda” Went FlypShip donor (3rd overall New Year National 2020)

He is a product of the first flush out of this donor and One & Only’s first kid crop. He was sold on the Midwest Fever in Lebanon, IN

How did you get involved in the industry?
Our oldest son, Dayton, had started showing goats quite a few years ago and I swore we would never start raising goats. Never say never! Bought our first donors in 2019 and things have snowballed quickly since then!

What is one of the most memorable events from your time as a breeder?
Too many great memories with great families to pick just one.  We are in the business of making memories… savor them all!

What do you think has pushed your program forward over the years?
Without a doubt, embryo transfer and reproductive technologies. We have concentrated our program on 25 key donors and have utilized ET to make kid crops that are high and deep when it comes to quality.

What is your favorite part about raising goats?
Watching families struggle, learn, grow, and find success. There is something special about watching a kid or family’s competency grow over the season or years.

IOWA STATE FAIR 4-H

We will have December, January, March & April kids available private treaty off the farm, availble at live salesand at least one online sale on SConlinesales.com. We are excited for the 2022 kid crop that will be sired by One & Only (Harlem Handshake x Whistle x Don’t Stop x Safeword’s mom) from Halfmann Livestock.  First flush group starts kidding right after Thanksgiving.  Stop by and check them out this winter and spring!

Keep Swinging X Jade

Champion Commercial Doe 1st Midwest Wether Goat Series Show

Reserve Overall Market Goat Fayette County Premier Jackpot Day 1

Champion Commercial Doe and Overall Female Chasing Banners Show

Grand Wether Dam Homestead Summer Sizzler

Ohio State Fair Champion Commercial Doe

How did you get involved in the industry?
On a whim I bought two doe kids out of the local sale barn and then 40 more out of a sale barn in Texas. There was A LOT of learning and I eventually got hooked up with Glen & Rae Ann Martin. We have grown our operation to 750 does in less than 10 years.

What is one of the most memorable events from your time as a breeder?
Every year provides new memories but our most memorable event as a breeder  happens every year and that’s our live sale that takes place at our barn. It’s always exciting seeing everyone and the excitement in the kids when they get the goat they had picked out!

What do you think has pushed your program forward over the years?
I think our program is very unique since we don’t do any flush work. We use our own bucks when we do AI and the rest is natural breeding with those same bucks. We run 750 does and since we don’t flush our does they are need to click so that gives us a wide range of pedigrees and a ton of opportunities for breeding instead of just a few donors.

What is your favorite part about raising goats?
Our favorite part is getting to meet new people and creating friendships across the US. We absolutely love raising our kids in the greatest industry there is!

Fledderjohann Show Goats

OHIO STATE FAIR
CHAMPION SPOTLIGHT

Champion Market Goat – 2022 Ohio State Fair
Shown by Braxton Method – Bred by Fledderjohann

Pedigree/Genetics of this Champion:
Sire: Tag Team
Flushmate to keeper buck

How did you get involved in the industry?
Along with our son we began the show goat operation when he ended his 4-h career and wanted to continue to be involved in the show goat industry.

What is one of the most memorable events from your time as a breeder?
Winning the Ohio State Fair this year has to be top on the list as one of the most memorable events as a breeder. When our son Jordan died in 2019 we wanted to win one for him. Having his nephew on the show chain made it even more special!

What do you think has pushed your program forward over the years?
As a breeder you are always looking for ways to improve. When given the opportunity to purchase half of Tag Team from Stork Livestock we felt he would help move our program forward. His offspring is winning all across the country!

What is your favorite part about raising goats?
Our favorite part about raising goats is the people you meet in this industry. There are many that we have met in this industry that have become family to us.

Northern Exposure Livestock

MINNESOTA YOUTH LIVESTOCK EXPO
CHAMPION SPOTLIGHT

Champion Market Goat & Breeding Doe – 2022 Minnesota Youth Livestock Expo
Shown by Khloe Nelson – Bred by Northern Exposure

Pedigree/Genetics of this Champion:
Champion wether is an ET sired by Trip Advisor and dammed by NEL 398.  398 also had a natural kid that was Champion Middleweight at MYLE this year for Anna and her wether last year was 3rd heavyweight at the Houston Livestock Show for John Michael.
Champion doe is an ET sired by Afroman and dammed by NEL 617, who is a full sister to the mom of “Chuck”.

The wether has been at the top end of all his shows so far this year.  This was the first time out for the doe, but plan on seeing her in the fall shows!!

What is your Favorite doe/donor and why?
That’s a tough one.  We just flushed the mother to our buck we call “Prime Rib”, who just gave us 29 transferable embryos out of “Pandemonium”, so she has to be right up there.  But I’m thinking it is “Jewel”, our Friday Night Fiesta purchase from Kempker Livestock last fall.  Her natural Keep The Faith March doe kid was 3rd overall breeding doe at MYLE and we have high expectations of her.  “Jewel” just gave us 16 transferable embryos to “Pandemonium”, and we plan on flushing her in October again.

Is there any other information you would like to include?
Work with a family that will help and work with you.  With us increasing numbers, we are not able to get to see all of the goats we sell throughout the country, but technology helps us to keep in contact with each customer. For the local customers, we offer showmanship clinics a few times each summer at our farm.  This allows us to help on showmanship, feeding, fitting, and any other questions they may have.

What is your favorite part about raising goats?
Our favorite part is when we get to help family’s and children be a part or the showing industry.

Treadmill vs Track:
Have never used a track, but am very intrigued by it.  We do use a treadmill on our goats when they start to get some condition on them, and it seems to have helped. We also like to put them into an exercise area for them prior to the treadmill

Chain vs Halter:
We primarily use a chain, but if needed will use a halter.

What is your Favorite doe/donor and why?
Any one that cash flows

What us your advice for families wanting to start showing goats?
Get help from someone that has had significant success. Measure everything you do. If it works, do it again; if it doesn’t, don’t do it again

Treadmill vs Track
Both are effective tools to burn calories and tone and shaped muscle

Chain vs Halter
Use the one that makes the goat look the best

How did you get involved in the industry?
Our kids began showing in 1994 and we have been selling for Chandler Show Goats since 2003. Our break into raising our own came in 2015 when Erby Chandler allowed us to have a “stake in the game” by giving us 2 high quality doe kids.  Riding his coat tails, we have been able to make some quality livestock.

What is one of the most memorable events from your time as a breeder?
It is very difficult to pin point just one.  It has been a building block of events over the 14 yrs as a breeder.  This past show season 2021-2022    has been unfortunately, overwhelming and most memorable.   Ohio State Fair-American Royal- NAILE-New Years National-National Western Stock Show.

What do you think has pushed your program forward over the years?
Great People.
Without a doubt, we would be nothing without Erby Chandler and Chandler Show Goat genetics.
Other people who have made us who we are include my wife Dana, sons Tanner and Taylor, daughter-in-law Brittany, Caden Minter, Dr. Scott Hoyle DVM, John and Jackie Edwards, Cooper Bounds and Maycon Stork to name a few.

This wether was sold on Willoughby Livestock Sales in April 2021 and placed by Cooper Bounds and Caleb Boden.

How did you get involved in the industry?
Growing up on a small farm in Hillsboro Ohio.  My parents raised cattle,  sheep, handful of dairy goats along with many small animals and wildlife.   Although my passion at the time was trail riding horses.   I got my fair share of nurturing livestock my intire youth.   4-H and FFA was the foundation that built me.  In 2007 Jeff purchased a few doe’s and a buck as a small project for our newly developed farm just outside of Hillsboro.   The following spring with only a few kids born we were approached by our first client in search of a jackpot wether.  That simple request started the spark of interest to explore the wether goat industry.   With little to base off of the literature began to build on the table and pile in the dash board of the truck.  That very year we raised the Grand Champion Wether at the Highland County Fair.   Raising County Champions every year since and gradually raising jackpot, state and now national level champions.  The pure energy generated by the youth is undoubtedly the fuel that drives us.  As well as the relationships we foster with the families fills our hearts with joy.  Our journey began on a small farm,  small budget, and big DREAMS.

It was our devotion of staying within our style and look and having patience of building a solid doe foundation.   We kept 100% of our doe crop the first 5 years and to this day we still retain 90% of does each year.

What is your favorite part about raising goats?
Walking into the barn and being greeted by their wide eyed furry faces.   I always shout ” Good Morning ” to quickly remembering how dislike the shouting of hungry goats.  But by far our favorite is the relationships we have fostered over the years.  Goats has brought fantastic “GOOD” people into our circle of friends.

ARIZONA NATIONAL
CHAMPION SPOTLIGHT

Reserve Grand Champion Wether Doe – 2022 Arizona National
Shown by Kaylie Stone – Bred by Stone Livestock

“Penny” as we call her is BTW Smacktalk X Rhiannon ( She Said Next X XXL). Rhiannon is our lead Donor and was Reserve Middleweight Doe at AZ Nationals in 2019 herself. Penny is a flush mate to our keeper buck “Talkin Kinky”.

How did you get involved in the industry?
Stacey was an Ag Teacher and Tracy grew up showing lambs. We became involved in the industry when our daughter, Kaylie, began showing goats. Toward the end of her show career we began to put more emphasis on the breeding side of things.

What is one of the most memorable events from your time as a breeder?
This win at Phoenix is our most memorable win not only because it was our first National win, but it was also Kaylie’s last show!

What do you think has pushed your program forward over the years?
Our herd mainly consists of Blue Team genetics. We have had a close relationship with Jamie & his dad, John Carl for many years. While our number of females is small we utilize embryo transfer and A.I. to help maximize our results. We work closely with KNT Farms, which is a partnership between Kaylie and her Grandmother.

What is your favorite part about raising goats?
We enjoy several aspects. The much anticipated kidding season is always exciting but seeing exhibitors with our goats in the show ring probably tops it all!

NAILE
CHAMPION SPOTLIGHT

Grand Champion Market Goat – 2021 North American International Livestock Expo
Shown by Cara Cummins – Bred by Halfmann

Fuzzy Handcuffs x Backup/Chunky Monkey

Cara’s wether was also Champion Division VI Wether at the 2021 Tulsa State Fair. The wether was purchased in our March Online Sale and placed by Cooper Bounds & Kale Hensley.

How did you get involved in the industry?
My family has been involved in the goat business since it’s inception in the 90’s. Throughout the years, droughts and dispersals, we changed our focus from fullbloods to a straight commercial operation, and in 2010 upon graduation from college, I invested heavily in wether genetics and here we are.

What is one of the most memorable events from your time as a breeder?
We’ve been fortunate to have success at the highest level in this business. While there may be “bigger” wins on our resumé, watching my 7-year old daughter hit the green shavings in Louisville for the first time and gathering a big banner would have to be the most special. It was a big accomplishment as a breeder, but the biggest “dad” moment yet.

What do you think has pushed your program forward over the years?
A steadfast, almost stubborn commitment to skeletal quality and prioritizing structure, even when it wasn’t popular or “trendy”. We believe in our vision and have seen an increase in success with a new slate of younger judges who prioritize quality, build and balance.

What is your favorite part about raising goats?
I enjoy studying genetics and implementing various breeding strategies in accordance to how things line up. I’m not always right, but it’s the game that keeps me going.

Reserve Champion Market Goat – 2021 North American International Livestock Expo
Shown by Jack Hoyle – Bred by Schrank

Oops x Next – full brother is in the keeper Buck pen, flush sister was the Reserve Grand Champion at the Georgia National Doe Show October 2021

Sold online – Jacks goat was also Grand Champion at Arkansas State Fair, Reserve Grand Four States Fair, Division Champ and Third Overall AYE!

How did you get involved in the industry?
We started raising sheep about 20 years ago. About 10 years ago the goat industry started becoming more popular so we decided to try our luck.

What is one of the most memorable events from your time as a breeder?
My most memorable times are working with the mentally and physically challenged kids. Having them and their parents tell me about the impact showing animals has had on their lives.

What do you think has pushed your program forward over the years?
Not kidding myself on my opinion of the animals but the animals ability to compete at the top level.

What is your favorite part about raising goats?
Working side by side with family and the many friendships that formed along the way.

Pocket Change (5814) x 75G51 LaCopa

This wether sold as Lot #1 at the Big Guns Sale #1 in Brownwood Texas

How did you get involved in the industry?
Our two families have thirty plus years involved in showing and raising competitive livestock in Texas. Most of that has been raising club lambs but we have moved our interest over to the goat industry and it has been a good fit for our entire team. Both Tina and Carla have a true passion for the goat industry and Jeff and Kevin have focused there energy in the same direction. It is our goal to reach as many families as we can who are interested in our goats and our guidance with their projects. The relationships we build with our customers (family) is the most rewarding part of the business no doubt.

What is one of the most memorable events from your time as a breeder?
It is the gratification of seeing one of those that came out of your lambing or kidding barn make the Backdrop! Sometimes that is a first for a kid at his county show and other times it is on the big stage at a state or national level. There is nothing more gratifying or enjoyable!

What do you think has pushed your program forward over the years?
Our focus is on building this operation with the best genetics available and being diligent in reaching our goals. We have not held back in our flush, IVF or AI programs and already have over 200 head of does and recips carrying embryos to some of the best bucks in the country for our 2022 kid crop. We will kid out 300 does and another 100 recips carrying our IVF and flush babies. We have also tried to purchase the some of the very best bucks and does from the top breeders in this industry and we are looking forward to the impact they will have on our herd.
We like being the new guys out here and just want to make sure we build a genetic base that will allow all of those who believe in our program the ability to compete at any level in this industry. We have a true passion for this industry and that is the driving force pushing us forward.

What is your favorite part about raising goats?
For Jeff and Tina it may be more on the breeding and kidding as well as the genetic lines of our flock. On our side, Carla and I love promoting the sales and dealing with the customers as well as studying and placing those goats in good homes. Both families enjoy watching one we thought was good from day one turn out and win. We get along well and have common goals as priority.

This wether was also Grand Champion Wether at the Scott County Invitational Livestock Show and Reserve Grand Wether in both shows at the Back to School Bash and the Smith County Jackpot. A thank you to Cooper Bounds for placing this goat!

How did you get involved in the industry?
I showed livestock competitively during 4-H and FFA and started raising show goats after my time at Butler Community College.

What do you think has pushed your program forward over the years?
Working with Cooper Bounds to constantly line up better genetics.

What is your favorite part about raising goats?
Watching our goats be successful not only in the show ring but also in production settings.

Reserve Champion Market Goat – 2021 Kentucky State Fair
Shown by Phoenix Stacy – Bred by HJ

Sire: SF Yellowstone
Dam: Schafer Farms J40

Congratulations to Phoenix Stacy on his Reserve Supreme Champion Wether at the 2021 Kentucky State Fair!  Phoenix’s wether was sired by Schafer Farms Yellowstone (linebred 191) and out of Schafer Farms J40 (full sib to Einstein).  SF Yellowstone had a killer kid crop for our program including the Supreme Wether at the 2021 Indiana State Fair, the Bronze Medallion Wetherdam at the 2021 CA Youth Ag Expo, and multiple banner wins throughout the CA jackpot circuit. This wether sold online sale through showgoats.com. Special thanks to Cooper Bounds/Christine Pence for placing him! Our sale season starts in January for fall borns, with the top end of our sets selling online through showgoats.com. We had the opportunity to lease SF Yellowstone again this year and will have an outstanding set from him and our other lead bucks including BTW Snip (5814 x Ronda’s mom), Finders Keepers (Swipe Right x Lieutenant Dan) bred by Allan Morgan, and Davis (B18 (191) x El Diablo).  Also an exciting set of ET/IVF kids from our elite set of donors!
